Jussie Smollett asks Illinois Supreme Court to overturn his conviction for lying about hate crime attack

“What should have been a straightforward case has been complicated by the intersection of politics and public outrage,” Smollett’s attorneys wrote in a court filing late Monday.

Jussie Smollett has asked the Illinois Supreme Court to review an appellate ruling upholding his conviction for lying about being the victim of a hate crime attack. “What should have been a straightforward case has been complicated by the intersection of politics and public outrage,” Smollett’s attorneys wrote in a court filing late Monday. A three-judge panel of the state appellate court in December affirmed the former “Empire” actor’s conviction and said it did not find his sentence unreasonable.
