Josh Gad Had to Explain Recent ‘Star Wars’ Lore to Mel Brooks During a Pitch Meeting for ‘Spaceballs’ Sequel

At a pitch meeting for the "Spaceballs" sequel, it was up to Josh Gad to catch Mel Brooks up on the recent happenings of the "Star Wars" franchise.

Mel Brooks, who helmed the classic “ Star Wars ” parody “ Spaceballs,” has not returned to the franchise since his 1987 feature. Adapted from George Lucas’ original “Star Wars” trilogy, “Spaceballs” centers around President Skroob (Brooks) as he commands Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) to take Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) hostage in a trade for the oxygen-rich air supply of planet Druidia. Josh Greenbaum will direct from a script penned by Gad, Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez.
