Jonathan Groff is glad no one outed him: 'So grateful that someone didn't rip the truth out of me'

Jonathan Groff says he's very grateful that he was allowed to come out as gay in his own time. He says it took many steps to get there.

Groff is "so grateful that someone didn't rip that truth out of me, that I was surrounded by such loving people," he said Thursday on NPR's Wild Card with Rachel Martin. "Even when I moved to New York and I was in Spring Awakening with a cast of my peers — and everyone knew probably that Cody, my boyfriend, was not my roommate, which is what I said he was — no one ever really pushed me to declare who I was. The Glee costar, who's also known for voicing Kristoff in Frozen, stealing the show as King George III in Hamilton, and winning a Tony Award for the musical Merrily We Roll Along in 2024, came out in 2009.
