John Prescott dies as devastated family say former deputy PM and TV star passed away listening to jazz

Former deputy prime minister John Prescott has died at the age of 86, his family has announced

"John spent his life trying to improve the lives of others, fighting for social justice and protecting the environment, doing so from his time as a waiter on the cruise liners to becoming Britain's longest serving deputy prime minister." Born to a railwayman on May 31, 1938, in Prestatyn, North Wales, Lord Prescott waved goodbye to school at 15, donned the chef's hat as an apprentice, before swapping kitchens for the high seas as a Cunard Line steward, eventually making the leap into the political fray. In a private 2007 correspondence, Sir Tony Blair tipped his hat to his former deputy, suggesting Lord Prescott’s talent for resolving issues, harmonising colleagues, and adept problem-solving was "integral part of getting things done".
