Japan’s Online Video Sector Will Drive Domestic Screen Industry, Total Industry Revenue Set To Hit $34 Billion By 2029 — MPA Report
Japan’s online video industry is set to grow at a 7% compound annual growth rate over the next five years, according to a Media Partners Asia report.
The report also found that the number of theatrical releases has recovered to pre-Covid levels and local movies continue their dominance in Japan, contributing around 70% of gross box office. MPA estimated that Japanese anime monetization across TV, streaming, and theatrical reached US$2.5 billion in Japan in 2023, which formed over 8% of the country’s total screen industry revenue. MPA executive director Vivek Couto said that Japan’s market for online VOD streaming will continue to improve, with fibre broadband accounting for 82% of household penetration.
