Jamie Theakston's cancer was first spotted by a listener who told him his voice 'wasn't right'


Radio and TV presenterJamie Theakston thanked the listeners of his Heart Radio show for prompting him to get a health problem investigated, which has turned out to be cancer. Jamie has been diagnosed with Stage 1 Laryngeal cancer – a type of cancer that affects the larynx (voice box) – and originally got his throat problem checked out after fans got in touch to tell him that his voice “hadn’t sounded right” recently on air.

Amanda and Jamie won't be on air together for a few months (Image: Heart)The 53-year-old’s message read: "Sooo – a few of you listeners have noticed my voice hasn't sounded right these past few weeks – I've got you to thank... Got it checked – Doctors found a lesion on my vocal cords which I've had removed this weekend – thanks for all the kind messages – should be back on my feet soon – in the meantime..." alongside a zipped-mouth emoji. He returned to radio in 2005, replacing Jonathan Coleman on Heart Breakfast, which he presents with Amanda Holden, who previously expressed how much she was missing her co-host when he first took time off for his health troubles.
