Jamie Oliver withdraws 'damaging' children's book as he issues apology

Jamie Oliver has apologised and issued a statement after his new children's book, Billy and the Epic Escape, was pulled from shelves and accused of being "irresponsible and damaging".

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has had to apologise and pull his latest children's book from shelves after facing backlash for its "irresponsible and damaging" content, as called out by an education body for Indigenous Australians. The issue arose due to content that seemed inconsistent with what is described as the "Indigenous way", sparking a debate about the language used, particularly because the young girl featured is from Alice Springs but speaks in vernacular more common to New South Wales and Queensland. The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Corporation (Natsiec) has come forward with strong criticism of the book, with Chief Executive Sharon Davis labelling Billy and the Epic Escape as "irresponsible and damaging, reflecting a profound lack of understanding and respect".
