James Van Der Beek has spoken out about his decision to announce his cancer diagnosis, and why he revealed it the way he did

In his Instagram post, Van Der Beek echoed this sentiment, writing, “I’ve been dealing with this privately until now, getting treatment and dialing in my overall health with greater focus than ever before. “So now it’s like, ‘What am I building my life around?’ [I realized] so many of the things that I entertained doing were either based [on] some outdated idea of what I thought would be important to make me happy or somebody else’s hope or dream or expectation.”
