Jakob Bro: Taking Turns review – lost masterpiece from great Dane’s understated jazz supergroup
Played by world-class personnel including Bill Frisell and the late, great alto saxophonist Lee Konitz, this 2014 set is full of subtle, spontaneous ideas
German pianist and former Brad Mehldau student Benjamin Lackner adds American A-listers Mark Turner (tenor sax) and Linda May Han Oh (bass) to familiar partners in trumpeter Mathias Eick and drummer Matthieu Chazarenc on Spindrift (ECM). On UK trumpeter Mark Kavuma ’s Magnum Opus (Banger Factory Records), this dynamic performer and enabler works with a multigenerational collective of local talent – from saxophonist/composer Mussinghi Brian Edwards to newcomers including vocalist Sahra Gure and pianist Noah Stoneman – on a jubilant programme of hard bop, neo-soul, and Mingus and Monk influences. And that imperishably classy UK guitar legend Jim Mullen takes his ever-bluesy lyricism out for a cool stroll with a sax-and-organ quartet on For Heaven’s Sake (Stunt Records), a delightful mix of soul-jazz, ballads and straightahead swing.
