ITV soap boss retires after 27 years as Corrie and Emmerdale undergo major shake-up

ITV has announced that John Whiston is stepping down from his role as Managing Director of Continuing Drama and Head of ITV in the North after 27 years with the company

He revealed the upcoming changes in leadership, stating: "With the appointment of Iain MacLeod as Creative Director and Matt Cleary as Chief Operating Officer and with fantastic stories in place for the move to five episodes a week next January, and a never-before-seen mega mash-up between the two shows, the future for our ITV Soaps is set fair", reports the Mirror. This news follows a series of announcements from the ITV soaps, including an intriguing Corrie and Emmerdale crossover special, and plans to cut back on the number of weekly episodes starting next year. Back in February, ITV revealed that Coronation Street and Emmerdale will experience a major schedule shake-up next year, which will result in each soap airing one hour less per week.
