Italian TV Fest Shines Global Spotlight on Local Series

Backed by strong institutional support, the Italian Global Series Festival aims to create an Emmy equivalent for the Italian TV sector.

Carried over from the original RomaFictionFest, the Maximo Prize takes its name from a small golden statue bearing a typical name from ancient Rome as an homage to the festival’s roots in the capital. The guild-based approach will be equally central to the prize’s identity, with organizers aiming to establish it as Italy’s premier television honor, on par with the David di Donatello for film, and internationally with the Emmy or BAFTA. This year’s Italian competition lineup offers a strong showcase of standout local productions, including Netflix’s historical drama “The Law According to Lidia Poët,” starring Matilda De Angelis; the latest season of HBO’s “My Brilliant Friend;” and several high-profile Sky Atlantic originals, among them the much-lauded limited series “The Art of Joy”—winner of three David di Donatello awards, perhaps due to the lack of a more tailored honor—and Joe Wright’s “Mussolini: The Son of the Century,” which premiered in Venice and was recently picked up by Mubi for North America.
