Is The Tattooist of Auschwitz based on a true story?

As historical drama The Tattooist of Auschwitz starring Harvey Keitel and Melanie Lynskey begins on Sky, we look at how the story is based both on a novel and real-life events

New Sky series The Tattooist of Auschwitz stars Harvey Keitel in the story of one man’s experience of the concentration camp where more than a million people were murdered during World War II. The six-part drama tells the story of Lali, a Slovakian Jew who is deported to Auschwitz in 1942, where he is made one of the Tatowierer – the tattooists who were ordered to ink identification numbers on their fellow prisoners’ arms.
