Inside the Time100 Next Gala: Sabrina Carpenter Performs, Laufey Wants to Collaborate With Reneé Rapp
Sabrina Carpenter, Reneé Rapp and Laufey were among the honorees at the Time100 Next Gala in New York City.
The pop star took a slight detour amid her “Short n’ Sweet” tour across North America to perform acoustic versions of her hits “Please Please Please” and “Espresso” at the intimate soiree. Wes Moore of Maryland, basketball player Jaylen Brown, scientific researcher Dr. Mehreen Datoo and “Shogun” star Anna Sawai, who this year became the first actor of Asian descent to win the Emmy for best lead actress in a drama series. But I don’t believe the Asian actresses who came before me didn’t deserve it,” Sawai said, noting they either did not have the chance to play “complex roles” like her “Shogun” character Mariko, or they were “still limited” even when they received opportunities.
