Many industry veterans are dismayed at how quickly Big Media gave up on the channel brands that helped introduce the concept of cable TV service to Americans in the 1980s and offered up an enviable dual revenue stream. Comcast is pitching the spinoff plan as a best-case scenario for both companies: NBCUniversal gets to focus on programming two strong networks that aim for distinct audiences and provide the most-watched elements of its Peacock streamer (specifically, live sports and that addictive Bravo fare).
