Inside the battle of eco-Hogsmeade: Villagers are furious at Harry Potter star Rupert Grint's plans to build a new green town beside his £5.4m estate. Now it is all set to come to a head, finds KATHRYN KNIGHT

Rupert Grint - the current 'Lord' of Kimpton Grange's manor house, outbuildings and land after purchasing the Hertfordshire property 15 years ago - plans to build smart new 'eco' housing.

In doing so he became master of a vast and imposing estate, which stands at the end of a sweeping tree-lined drive and comes complete with two guest cottages, a lake, paddocks and two swimming pools in this affluent part of the county. Entrepreneurially minded, Rupert’s parents encouraged their son to invest in property, an avenue they also travelled down themselves, buying two large townhouses of their own with a combined worth of £2.7million, one of which they transformed into a luxury guest house, though the venture ended after three years. The application was subsequently withdrawn, and replaced five months later by fresh plans to convert an already existing barn on the property into six three-bedroom dwellings including creation of new access and footpath link to Kimpton.
