“It is with deep sadness that we announce that husband and father, Franz Beckenbauer, passed away peacefully in his sleep yesterday, Sunday, surrounded by his family,” a statement read. The German football legend was known for his incredible skills on the pitch, having won the World Cup twice during his life – once in 1974 when he was the captain and the other in 1990 when he was the manager. Away from his family life, Franz made headlines for his behaviour off the pitch and The Sun reports that a mix-up in 2006 led to him receiving “countless” calls from people who thought they were contacting a sex hotline.
