In Praise of Noah Wyle's Dr. Robby, the Ache at the Heart of The Pitt
In just one season, Wyle has already given us one of the most captivating TV characters of the past decade.
And I love the cast—Shanaba Azeez, Patrick Ball, Isa Briones, Taylor Dearden, Fiona Dourif, Gerran Howell, Tracy Ifeachor, Katherine LaNasa, Supriya Ganesh and a handful more all give wonderful, nuanced performances in what I assume will become career-defining roles. It’s largely due to the countless patients he’s seen pass away under his care during his years in the emergency room, but it’s catalyzed in season one by the lingering guilt he feels about having not been able to save his mentor during the pandemic. “No… no I didn’t, ” says Robby, his eyes now suddenly wet, his words beginning to tumble out of his mouth like cars piling up in a freeway crash as he delivers the rest of his lines through tears.
