What a pleasure it is to have Camera Obscura back with new album Look to the East, Look to the West after more than a decade away, as songs like the wistful “The Light Nights” illustrate how adept the Scottish pop troupe remains at making heartache sound remarkably catchy. She may have helped create effervescent pop gems like Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso” and Tate McRae’s “Greedy,” but songwriter Amy Allen can also sing the hell out of darkly lit indie-rock songs like “Girl With a Problem,” a searing standalone single that hopefully suggests more solo material is on the way.
