Iconic music TV channels to close in weeks - and fans are devastated

One of Britain's best-loved music channels is closing - along with a host of other household names

It's a tough blow for the fans still watching, especially given The Box's long history during the heyday of music TV, being founded as a competitor to MTV back in 1992. Its original format involved viewers phoning to vote on the songs they would like to see and the channel is thought to have been instrumental in the rise of The Spice Girls, playing their first single Wannabe months before it was released. "Our strategy reflects the generational shift in TV viewing and involves reducing costs – particularly in linear activities - to allow us to invest in digital priorities and stay competitive in a world of global entertainment conglomerates and social media giants."
