Iconic 80s star met horrific end at just 40 – after incredible one-hit wonder success

A huge 1980s star was killed when their rented car was involved in a catastrophic collision with a bus. Falco, best known for his huge hit Rock Me Amadeus, was just 40 years old when his flame was extinguished forever, an incredible 36 years ago.

The Austrian-born singer and musician, whose original name was Johann Holzel, was leaving an entertainment complex back in February 1998 and pulling onto the highway near Puerto Plata, a popular Caribbean holiday spot, when his Mitsubishi sport-utility vehicle was hit by a small bus. At the time, the tragic accident went largely unnoticed in the English-speaking world, but in Vienna fans went into mourning over the death of the biggest star to emerge from Austria since the legendary composer Amadeus Mozart. His mother, Maria, had been pregnant with triplets, but sadly miscarried the identical twins in her dizygotic pregnancy – with only Johann, who was conceived in a separate ovum, survived.
