Ian McKellen Tells Closeted Actors to Come Out as Gay: ‘Being in the Closet Is Silly. There’s No Need for It. Don’t Listen to Your Advisers’

Ian McKellen says closeted actors should come out as gay, even if their agents say otherwise.

Kate Winslet told The Sunday Times in 2021 that it’s “dated crap” for Hollywood to overlook gay actors, especially when it comes to casting straight parts. “I cannot tell you the number of young actors I know — some well known, some starting out — who are terrified their sexuality will be revealed and that it will stand in the way of their being cast in straight roles,” the Oscar winner said.
