How ‘Operation Mincemeat,’ the absurdist World War II-set London import, became a Broadway darling.

“At the top of the show, we now say: ‘This is a true story,’ so Americans understand we’re not just making this all up,” says David Cumming, who stars in “Mincemeat” with fellow co-writers Zoë Roberts and Natasha Hodgson. “Mincemeat” features five actors rotating through 82 characters — Jak Malone, a Tony nominee for his slew of parts, and Claire-Marie Hall round out the cast. Though the production is purposely silly, the writers noticed that one scene was resonating more pointedly in the U.S. As MI5 officers consider aborting the plan to trick Hitler, one character warns, “If people like us just blindly follow orders, the fascists won’t need to bash the door down.
