How the NAACP Image Awards Pivoted to Spotlight L.A.’s Black Communities Affected by the Wildfires

The NAACP and BET reimagined the 56th NAACP Image Awards to spotlight the Black communities devastated by the L.A. wildfires.

As plans for the awards came together, Orlando announced that the live broadcast, which is simulcast on BET and CBS, had been extended by an additional 30 minutes to 2.5 hours so there’d be more time to drive support for the fire victims. It’ll also be the responsibility of the show’s host, Deon Cole, who follows in the footsteps of Steve Harvey, Cedric the Entertainer, Anthony Anderson and Queen Latifah as emcee, to set the right tone for the evening. His humor, deep appreciation for the culture, and commitment to our community has cemented him as an entertainment legend,” said Derrick Johnson, NAACP president and CEO, in a statement announcing the news.
