How Done+Dusted Found the Right Tone for Conan O’Brien’s Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize, as Both a Celebration and a Wake: ‘It Was So Cathartic’
How producers at Done+Dusted found the right tone Conan O'Brien's Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize, now on Netflix, between celebration and wake.
Now streaming on Netflix (and an Emmy contender for the variety special — pre-recorded category), “Conan O’Brien: The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor” features O’Brien alongside a who’s who of contemporary comedy greats: Adam Sandler, Andy Richter, John Mulaney, Stephen Colbert, Nikki Glaser, Sarah Silverman, Bill Burr, Will Ferrell, Kumail Nanjiani and David Letterman — among many others. Jammy said the taping was a “moment of catharsis” for the entire building, as shell-shocked Kennedy Center staffers were winding things down and saying goodbye to co-workers and even the organization as they knew it. Jammy (above), who has produced several editions of “The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor” and “The Kennedy Center Honors” in recent years, said he took solace in something 2022 honoree Jon Stewart said on a previous special: “A few years ago during his acceptance speech, Jon Stewart said that comedians are the ‘banana peel in the coal mine’ – meaning that they are at the coal face and are the first to respond to any given moment,” he said.
