Despite this established track record of only picking famouses, the first Mulaney Emmy nomination was Writing for Comeback Kid, long before he ascended to everyone’s parasocial squeeze. Unlike writing, there’s a less coherent sense of taste and perspective in the directing group, and that in part points to how this category becomes that one weird kitchen drawer where you throw everything that doesn’t go anywhere else.
