How ‘American Primeval’ Music Editors Created Tense Anxiety With ‘Wailing, Low, Dangerous Sounds’


The "American Primeval" artisans talk the Netflix show's sound and music.

Told through the perilous journey of a young mother and her son desperate to start anew, the show examines several groups of Americans, including pioneers, Indigenous people, military men and Mormons, all clambering to survive in a profoundly volatile, fear-filled world. Since the fight, which turns into an ambush, takes place at night, Jimkes-Root says the show’s composers and rock band Explosions in the Sky, helped create “weird textures and music” with their guitars to “get that sense of danger lurking out there.” So there are very creative ways to have this tension and this pulse in the show be reflected through the different instrumentations that, again, work really well with the sound design.”
