Glee star Darren Criss, who is half-Filipino, said in 2020: “It’s tough, this idea of ‘white-passing.’ It’s not even a term I heard of until the past two years. Never Have I Ever star Darren, who is part Japanese, told Teen Vogue in 2021 that he has struggled with feeling like he’s “not Asian enough” in the acting world. Finally, Chloe, who is Chinese and American, revealed that she had a casting director explicitly tell her that she wasn’t “quite white enough” for a role, nor was she “Asian enough” for another.
