Harvey Guillén Says Hollywood Needs to Support More Latino Creatives: ‘It’s Like Pulling Teeth to Be Able to Tell a Story That Represents Us’

Harvey Guillén was honored at the National Hispanic Media Coalition Impact Awards Gala for his work on "What We Do in the Shadows."

The gala, hosted by Mayan Lopez and Annie Gonzalez at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel June 16, honored Latino creatives in the entertainment industry paving the way for others. During his acceptance speech for the outstanding performance in a series impact award, Guillén teared up, saying how emotional it felt to think of his younger self who was told that he was “too big, too poor, too loud and that his dream was simply unattainable.” Castañeda, who plays Diego Hargreeves on the series, says to increase representation on- and off-screen, studios need to keep renewing shows and there needs to be more programs to develop young filmmakers and creatives.
