She admits in the book that seeking therapy was delayed due to the inevitable discussion of her family, who are subject to intense public curiosity. Opening up is a powerful tool for healing, Gemma believes, "But one of the things shown to have the most positive impact on people having suicidal thoughts or in the depths of depression is to share stories when you go, 'That happened to me, I felt like that, and I feel better now. Her own depression made her feel "hollow, sad and unworthy", sharing that while she didn't have an active death wish, the longing to escape her life was overwhelming.
