Grammys set to celebrate female musicians as Taylor Swift eyes a record-breaking win
SZA tops the nominations with nine, but Swift’s pop-cultural heft could net her an unprecedented fourth win for album of the year
In a week where major research studies in both the US and UK acknowledged progress around representation in a historically male-dominated and often sexist music industry – while also finding numerous examples of misogyny – the Grammys are a sign that at female artists, at least, are being celebrated at the highest level. An impromptu headline DJ set at California’s Coachella festival last year, with Gibson alongside Skrillex and Four Tet, gobsmacked the crowd and went viral, showcasing his skill for high-intensity emotion and even poignancy amid the banging tempos.
