Goonies star Martha Plimpton reflects on 'first love' River Phoenix: 'I miss him every single day'

Martha Plimpton opened up about her nearly four-year relationship with River Phoenix, which she described as 'important' and 'altering.'

She added that Phoenix, who was nominated for an Oscar for his role in 1988's Running on Empty, had struggled with his rising fame as they got older. Plimpton said it was difficult for Phoenix to manage his substance abuse and that he was unable to get the help he needed before he died. "I think he would have been an incredible advocate for sobriety and for people struggling with addiction," Plimpton said tearily.
