Joey Bada$$ kicked off a bicoastal rap battle at the top of the year with the release of “ The Ruler’s Back,” where he reused an old Jay-Z line about all the attention the West Coast was getting after Kendrick’s victory over Drake. He then invited Kendrick to a battle on his Ray Vaughn response track “ The Finals,” and brought him up again on the song “ My Town ” featuring battle rap legend Loaded Lux where he mentions Lamar’s “boogeyman” status within the game and referenced his Pulitzer win with some wordplay.
