German Box Office Drops 6.5% in 2024, Far Below 1% in All of Europe, as Strikes, Sports Take Toll
A lack of blockbusters and major sports events led to a less than stellar box office in Germany, which was down compared to the whole of Europe.
Cinema attendance held firm across the continent as admissions slid only 2% to to 841 million due to the success of local productions in many markets, according to preliminary figures from the European Audiovisual Observatory published on Thursday. “In 2024, the European theatrical sector continued to feel the impact of strikes in the North American film industry, which disrupted production and delayed releases, weighing on box office results,” it added. Offering an upbeat forecast, he added that a number of blockbusters are expected in 2025, among them “ A Minecraft Movie,” “ Avatar: Fire and Ash ” and highly anticipated German titles like “Manitu’s Canoe” and “The Physician II.”
