GEMA Sues OpenAI Over Song Lyrics In a First for PROs
Germany's GEMA is suing OpenAI over its use of song lyrics to train its software, in a case aimed at clarifying copyright law in Europe.
AI copyright lawsuits are part of the zeitgeist, and this unique case filed in Germany could potentially clarify law in Europe. But OpenAI is already facing a considerable amount of litigation, including a putative class action from authors, a lawsuit from The New York Times, and one each from online publishers and other newspapers. “Our members’ songs are not free raw material for generative AI systems providers’ business models,” said GEMA CEO Tobias Holzmüller in a statement.
