GB News fined £100,000 by Ofcom after Rishi Sunak interview

Ofcom said it has imposed a £100,000 fine on GB News for "breaking due impartiality rules" following a question and answer-style debate with former prime minister Rishi Sunak

The media watchdog launched an investigation into GB News just three days after the broadcast of a programme on 12 February titled People’s Forum: The Prime Minister, which saw Mr Sunak fielding questions from a studio audience and a presenter. Mr Frangopoulos concluded by asserting that the planned sanctions by Ofcom contradict the regulator's obligation to act fairly and proportionately, particularly when it comes to free speech and political matters of public interest. In its initial decision, Ofcom pointed out that the episode featuring Rishi Sunak was "presented in the context of the forthcoming UK general election," which hadn't been called yet but was expected soon, and lacked a "appropriately wide range of significant viewpoints."
