Gavin and Stacey character removed from show finale as 'there was no room for them'
Gavin and Stacey fans were thrilled to see the beloved characters return for one final episode on Christmas Day - but one character was noticeably missing
The grand finale revealed Smithy, played by James Corden, had declined Nessa's (Ruth Jones) proposal from the much-talked-about 2019 Christmas special, and instead was opting to wed his other half Sonia, portrayed by Laura Aikman. Instead, viewers saw Smithy gearing up to tie the knot with his snobby girlfriend Sonia, portrayed by Laura Aikman, who had secretly joined the set to maintain the element of surprise. James also recounted the creative spark behind the finale's surprise: "I called Ruth and I was like, I wonder if we could trick everybody into thinking that for the first six or seven minutes that they're just going to watch a wedding between Nessa and Smithy.
