Gary Oldman and Paolo Sorrentino Embrace as ‘Parthenope’ Gets 9.5-Minute Standing Ovation at Cannes Film Festival


Paolo Sorrentino's love letter to Naples, 'Parthenope,' received a standing ovation at Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday night.

Tears streamed down the face of Della Porta, who plays the title character, and Sorrentino looked visibly moved as he addressed the crowd. Beyond Oldman, the film stars Celeste Dalla Porta, Stefania Sandrelli, Silvio Orlando, Luisa Ranieri, Peppe Lanzetta and Isabella Ferrari. Oldman plays the American writer John Cheever in the film, who set many of his short stories in Italy.
