The trial of one of France’s most famous screen stars is considered a pivotal moment in a country that has often been reluctant to confront sexual abuse, especially by influential and powerful men. The lawyer said that many other women would have pressed charges against Depardieu had it not been for the French statute of limitations, which prevents the prosecution of cases dating back more than ten years. Durrieu Diebolt, who is representing a 54-year-old set decorator named only as Amélie, said that she dealt “almost exclusively” with sexual assault cases but had never seen “one with only two plaintiffs that took four days to try”.
