From clapping dogs to sobbing stars, the Oscars were worth staying up for. Though the less said about Jonathan Ross's 'funny as a fungal infection' awards show the better..., writes JANE FRYER
We were assured that the Oscars were going to be less self-indulgent - and they were! It was shame that Jonathan Ross's show was just a blather of terrible jokes and padding.
So perhaps it’s kinder to fast forward – and past the Twitter frenzy of screaming memes, fury and angry posts from viewers that include ‘Ross is a funny as a fungal infection’ and which call it ‘a horror show’ – to the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and the real Oscars host, Jimmy Kimmel. In fact, after barely an hour, we are four Oscars down, 19 to go, watching the amazing Billie Eilish perform her hit from Barbie and marvelling at Ariana Grande’s gigantic candyfloss dress and that Emma Stone’s outfit has been modelled on a Fox’s Glacier mint. In fact, when Robert Downey Jr hops up on stage to accept his Best Supporting actor gong, even Messi the dog is sitting up alert, engaged in his plush red stalls seat and – maybe I’m seeing things because it is nearly 1am – appears to be clapping with his little front paws.
