French Animation Producers Adapt as Global Commissioners Tighten Their Belts


French animation companies saw a post-pandemic boom in foreign commmissions, but global platforms are cutting back, forcing studios to adapt.

The fall market and festival season is traditionally a thrilling time for the French animation sector as companies prepare to unveil new projects, partnerships, and distribution deals at events such as the Unifrance Rendez-Vous, Cartoon Forum, Mipcom and MipJunior. “We, producers and distributors alike, have all been affected by these cutbacks, directly or indirectly,” confirms Morgann Favennec, deputy managing director at Mediatoon and VP, international financing at Ellipse Animation. “We have a great FVOD platform called Okko, which is backed by pubcaster France Televisions, along with the 24-hour Gulli and TFX kids’ blocks, which also play a supportive role in the French industry.
