Free to read: Edwyn Collins: ‘After my stroke, I couldn’t listen to music. I was too sad’

As the veteran rocker releases a new album on the theme of communication, he and his wife talk of his recovery — and why it’s time to stop touring

Previous guests have included Henry Kissinger and George Clooney, but today it’s Edwyn Collins perched on a sofa with his wife, Grace, pondering the tantalising and now tortuous process of writing lyrics. As the lyricist and senior songwriter in Orange Juice, Collins was a seminal figure in pop music, celebrated for tracks such as 1979’s Falling and Laughing — which Sir Keir Starmer picked as one of his Desert Island Discs — and A Girl Like You, a Nineties anthem from his solo album Gorgeous George. The couple have also been cushioned by a healthy annual royalty cheque from A Girl Like You, which has frequently appeared in movies such as Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle and TV shows, most recently on Ted Lasso.
