Five Deaths Reported After Hurricane Helene Makes Landfall As Cat. 4 Storm With 140 MPH Winds, Record Breaking Storm Surge; 3.5M People Without Power


Hurricane Helene leaves three dead amid threat of flash flooding all the way up to Atlanta, with swath of FL in path of 15-20 ft. storm surge.

UPDATED, 5.45 AM PT: At least five people have died as a result of severe weather conditions as Category 4 Hurricane Helene slammed into the U.S. southeastern coast overnight, with winds gusting at 140 mph at its height. Looking forward, the NWS said Hurricane Helene was expected to continue north over the course of the morning to take its center to central and northeastern Georgia, and then turn northwestward and slow down over the Tennessee Valley later today and Saturday. A “catastrophic and deadly” storm surge is expected in northwestern Florida, up to 20 feet in the Big Bend area, along with powerful winds and flash floods hundreds of miles inland across much of the southeastern U.S., according to the National Weather Service.
