“It is a project that was of great importance to Malcolm — to the extent that he commissioned artwork for it and discussions concerning when it should be released were had regularly, though ultimately [2015’s] GO:OD AM and subsequent albums ended up taking precedence.” Prior to his tragic passing in 2018, the Pittsburgh native reached out to surrealist artist Alim Smith and commissioned him to design the album’s cover art. The Mac Miller Estate also released a Balloonerism animated film based on the album, which is directed by Samuel Jerome Mason and hit theaters in select cities across the globe this week.
