EU Fines Apple $2 Billion In Spotify Antitrust Case – Update

Apple has been fined €1.8B ($1.95B) for breaking antitrust roles in Europe over music streaming, in a case that followed complaints from Spotify.

The European Commissioning issued the heavy penalty, Apple’s first ever of its kind, after ruling the tech giant had prevented the likes of Spotify from informing consumers about “alternative and cheaper music subscription services” outside of the App Store. “The decision was reached despite the Commission’s failure to uncover any credible evidence of consumer harm, and ignores the realities of a market that is thriving, competitive, and growing fast,” the company said in a statement. Today, Spotify has a 56% share of Europe’s music streaming market — more than double their closest competitor’s — and pays Apple nothing for the services that have helped make them one of the most recognizable brands in the world.
