Ellen Pompeo on Why It Would ‘Make No Sense’ to Walk Away From ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

Despite scaling back her 'Grey's Anatomy' role, Ellen Pompeo has no intention of ever fully walking away from her title as Dr. Meredith Grey.

The medical drama was created by Shonda Rhimes and Michelle Lirtzman, running for 444 episodes (as of April 14) since premiering on March 27, 2005, with Season 21 currently underway. While many notable actors have walked the halls of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital — from Patrick Dempsey, Sandra Oh, Katherine Heigl, Jesse Williams, Sara Ramirez, and more — Pompeo has been a constant throughout the decade-long television series. Although she no longer appears regularly on the series — as she’s busy featuring in Hulu’s limited-series Great American Family — Pompeo remains as an executive producer on the show and has continued to narrate each episode’s opening and closing voiceover.
