Ellen Pompeo on Her Lasting Legacy, the ‘Really S—ty’ Streaming Residual Model and Meredith’s Choice This Season She Was ‘Deeply Against’
Ellen Pompeo looked back at her lengthy television career on 'Grey's Anatomy' ahead of accepteing her Hollywood Walk of Fame star.
A year later, following months of back-and-forth with skeptical executives, who had chosen to make the show a midseason replacement and even considered changing the title to “Complications,” “Grey’s” was an immediate hit, transforming its little-known creator and cast into household names. Pompeo has remained frank about how her decision to stay on “Grey’s” — which, at one point, made her the highest-paid female actor on a primetime drama — has stemmed from her prioritizing financial security and a happy home life over chasing more challenging work over the age of 40. Following the departure of her co-lead Patrick Dempsey, who played Meredith’s neurosurgeon husband Derek Shepherd, in Season 11, Pompeo credits executive producer/director Debbie Allen for being the “den mother” who helped breathe new life into a show in desperate need of a culture change.
