Eagles Lead Guitarist Steuart Smith Retires After Parkinsonism Diagnosis

Steuart Smith served as the Eagles' co-lead guitarist for 24 years and had joined the band for their Las Vegas residency

“It is with profound regret that, due to performance issues associated with my recently diagnosed Parkinsonism, I find that I must bow out of my role with the Eagles while I can still do so gracefully,” he said in a statement to the Los Angeles Times. “On advisement from his doctor, due to illness, it is with sincere regret that Sting must cancel his appearance at the Bass Magazine Awards this Thursday,” read a statement shared via the 73-year-old singer’s Instagram on Tuesday, January 21. “I’m trying to fill the giant shoes of all three that came before me,” Holt told the Dallas Morning News on Thursday, January 27, referring to Smith as well as previous lead guitarists Don Felder and Bernie Leadon.
