Dune: Prophecy’s Emily Watson Details Growing Up in a Cult-Like Group
Emily Watson grew up as part of the cult-like School of Economic Science, which shaped how she sees the world today
Watson, 57, plays Valya Harkonnen, leader of a controlling religious sect, HBO’s prequel series to the popular Dune films, which premieres November 17. The SES is a global group that preaches traditional gender roles, conservative sexual mores and has been a lightning rod for allegations of physical abuse as part of its strict disciplinary policies. “I was in a cult for 10 years,” Lenz said during a July 2023 episode of her “Drama Queens” podcast, which she cohosts with fellow OTH stars Hilarie Burton Morgan and Sophia Bush.
