Dope Thief Recap: That Old Family Feeling

Ray and Manny part ways on a tragic, discordant note.

A well-placed, well-utilized narrative shorthand of sorts, and therefore not the most artful episode, but an exciting one to be sure made all the more memorable by its heavy dips into the True Detective –style hallucinatory imagery emitting from the gutter-fog of the Philadelphia underworld. Nader has dismissed her insight completely, triggering a grimy investigation montage of exercise, combing through files, thinking while brooding in the company of coffee, cigarettes, and an old car door propped up on a chain-link fence for target practice. In any case, between Manny going out quietly in prison, Son Pham fighting off some would-be biker assassins from within his cell (pretty sus, that cryptic conversation with Xuan over the prison FaceTime or whatever — doesn’t bode well for anyone needing all the friends in low places they can get) and Ray fighting off the omniscient big-baddie voice and another “Yellow King”–esque obstacle course he’s made of Ray’s hospital floor — complete with an absent nursing staff and spooky minimal fluorescent lighting — we’re deep in the ninth level of hell and squared up to face the finale’s cold, ferocious tenth.
