Reading the clear writing on the wall, Department of Justice Special Counsel Jack Smith filed paperwork to drop the felony charges against Trump on 2020 election subversion that led to the bloody January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol. The abrupt end to this two year long cases for the former Celebrity Apprentice host is no real surprise — with Smith himself already exiting the DOJ upon the results of the Republican trouncing Vice President Kamala Harris on November 5. With Trump having threatened to fire Smith ASAP on January 20, 2025, Monday’s move in the bitterly contested case is a clear winner for the 45th and soon-to-be 47th POTUS as he consolidates power.
